No good deed ever goes unpunished. Especially when it's 10 degrees outside.

It was unseasonably snowy in Redding, CA this year. My mate has a 2002 Tacoma TRD, 3 inch lift, ARB bumper, winch, etc.. We figured we'd drive about and pull all of the idiots out of the ditch since we never get snow, and thus, noone knows how to drive in it.

We drove past a road which had many cars in various states of having been spun whilst trying to go up a 3% grade. We parked at the top and walked down to a man and a woman who were wandering about with luggage in their arms. Granted, it wasnt a LONG walk, but it was still some distance from the truck.

After our waltz down the hill we kindly said "Hey, are you guys alright? Your van looks quite stuck." There was an FJ Cruiser parked and on nearby, but it didnt look like he would have any luck pulling what ended up being his Girlfriend out.

"No, I don't need your help kids, just stay back, ok" said the male. "But thanks for the offer!" were the words of the female, who looked annoyed with his tone. We were astonished. We just offered to help pull your freaking Honda Odyssey out of the freaking ditch, and you're a dick about it? Whatever, bro. Keep shuffling boxes out of your minivan and keep resting them on the wet ground.

As we walk up, we notice some snow has settled on top of the FJ and is melting down into the cabin because the door hadnt been shut properly. "Hey, is this yours? We can shut the door your leath.." "NO! Step away from my car! If you try and steal it I'll call the cops!"

Really? We hike all the way down there SPECIFICALLY TO HELP YOU, AND YOU ACT LIKE A DOUCHE? Insane. We walked back to the truck and went home. Our one interaction with this guy totally discouraged us from helping anyone else. There was no sense in going out and risking our own vehicle to try and help others who were inconsiderate.

People are stupid. I had a guy (from Cali as well) refuse my help when he had car trouble on the side of the road in a very similar way. It was snowy and he had either pulled off or slid off a relatively smooth, but sloped side to where he couldn't get traction to get back on the road. As I drop past I saw him futily trying to get out, and whipped my car around to go back and help.

As soon as I pulled up next to him he rolled his window half up and said something I could barely understand. I pulled closer and all I could here him yell is "you can't steal my car!" I was dumbfounded, especially since I was in a newish S2000 and he was in an early 90s Buick a broke college kid wouldn't buy. At that point I just yelled back something about being sorry for mistaking him for someone I didn't want to freeze death and drove off.

Moral of the story? Some people are too proud or stupid to deserve help.

Okay not trying to be a douche myself but seriously this is how people end up getting murdered. You help someone out of a ditch or give someone a lift and they end up being psycho serial killers.

I'm of the opinion unless someone specifically asks for help don't even bother. And if I need help I'm willing to just pay for it, no such thing as a free lunch.

Some other Oppo member here gave some random person some help with their flat by "loaning" them his spare tire and the guy promised to give it back to him and instead the guy skipped town.

As you said no good deed goes unpunished.
